Letter: Open letter to GOPAC leaders on violations of election privacy laws

I am writing to you, Chairman David Avella, and Executive Director of GOPAC Jessica Curtis, to express how astounded I am at your unethical “public shaming” of the voting history of my neighbors and me.

I received a postcard paid for by the Republican GOPAC Education Fund that “outs” 10 people in my immediate neighborhood on their voting record in the Nov. 2012, Nov. 2014, and Aug. 2016 elections, using their names and addresses. This exemplifies a complete disregard for privacy, not only of voting records, but also location identification.

This is sensitive information and could also be considered a personal safety issue. Given you are sending this by bulk mail, I imagine you are currently publicly shaming thousands of people in America. Why would you leave anyone out?

Also, the information is not accurate. It shows that I didn’t vote in two of the three elections mentioned. In fact, I always vote. I now feel compelled to correct that fact with my neighbors. I also feel very uncomfortable knowing my neighbors’ voting records and believe some of their records may not be wrong.

Aren’t voting records confidential? Where did you get this information?

I hope that someone will look into this and shame you for using extremely unethical practices.
