Letter: Let’s champion the immigrants who are part of our community

We are a peaceful community here in Carnation. It is one of our best qualities. We co-exist peacefully and respectfully. We should make a public commitment to continue this way, especially when a segment of our population is targeted by discrimination.

How incredible would it be for the kids who attend Carnation Elementary, whose vision statement includes providing “a caring, safe, and nurturing environment for all” to see our city doing the same? Or the parishioners of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church whose mission statement says “we are accepting of all, united in our diversity and serve each other in the caring spirit of social justice and friendship” to know their city agrees.

Phil Messina, the Carnation city manager, said that they don’t ask for immigration status when residents call to set up utilities. Let’s make a stand. Immigrants are a part of our community. We need to champion them. We teach our children these principles and now it’s time to show them.

In the words of the city of Shoreline’s mayor, Chris Roberts, we have a “responsibility and a duty to stand up for the rights of all our residents.” Carnation should actively work to provide a safe environment for all of us in this community.
