The Mount Si High School jazz bands will host their fifth-annual “Jazz at the Club” event, set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 16 at the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge Golf Club.

Formally-dressed school band members will serenade the audience with tunes including “Afro Blue” and “Our Love is Here to Stay.” The program will also feature jazz vibraphonist Susan Pascal.

“It’s extremely fancy and there’s lots of desserts. It’s going to be sweet,” said sophomore drummer Chris Hindmarch.

The event is the largest fund-raiser for Mount Si’s band program, which includes two instrumental concert groups, two jazz bands, an African drumming ensemble, and an audio engineering course.

Proceeds from the event provide new music and band instruments, transportation to band festivals, and guest artists for performances and education. Part of this year’s proceeds will go toward new chairs for the program. Sophomore trumpet player Josh Yoker said the chairs students currently use are heavy, difficult to stack and don’t promote good posture.

Guest artist Pascal is classically trained and has recorded for a number of musicians, including Orville Johnson, The Jazz Police, Neil Andersson, Connie Evingson, and Greta Matassa, as well as for motion picture soundtracks including “The Wedding Planner” and “Office Space.”
