Young readers battle with book smarts
May 13, 2009 · Updated 7:41 PM
Despite tough competition, Fall City Elementary School held on to win the Battle of the Books for the second year in a row. Sydney Hydell, Madison Hydell, Martin Rasmussen, Ein Chang and team captain Emma Mischke matched their knowledge of 14 books against teams from each elementary school. The books had been selected by librarians from the elementary schools for the Friday, May 8 event.
The participants had to answer a bevy of questions about the books.
“We’re so happy that we won for the whole school,” Madison Hydell said.
“I don’t know how to feel,” Rasmussen said excitedly.
The competition gets students excited about literature, said Colleen McEldowney, a librarian at Snoqualmie Elementary School, which hosted event.
“It gets them excited about literature that they might not have read,” she said.
