The chief of Eastside Fire and Rescue has been chosen for a research award.

This month, Fire Chief Lee Soptich will receive the 2008 Executive Fire Officer Outstanding Applied Research Award, during the National Fire Academy’s officer symposium banquet in Maryland.

Soptich was one of four authors whose research papers qualified for the honor.

He wrote a paper on establishing core emergency operations standards for fire departments, comparing national standards with local practices.

"My name is on the paper. The work was all done by the agency," Soptich said. EFR crews drilled to help create the research data that will help establish the best practices within the department.

"We're looking for ways to shave seconds," Soptich said. "If we can find ways to deliver the service quicker, then the outcome is always better."
