Snoqualmie has snagged top prize in Puget Sound Energy's yearlong "Take Charge Green Power Challenge," which lasted all of last year.
The award of $40,000 will be used to install a solar project at the Snoqualmie Valley YMCA. The King County city also gained bragging rights as 2013’s "Greenest Town in the Puget Sound."
The competition was a combined effort between PSE and the cities of Snoqualmie, Tumwater, Kirkland, Anacortes and Bainbridge Island, as well as local businesses and residents. The aim was to increase the adoption of electricity generated from renewable energy sources in the region.
• The participation rate in Snoqualmie increased by over 150 percent from December 31, 2012. Their overall participation rate now stands at 8.2 %.
• Among the other four cities, participation increased an average of 48%.
• In each of the cities, the participation rate is over 6 percent, which is well over the 4% average participation rate throughout our territory and 2% nationally.
All five cities earned an initial award of $20,000 each by meeting their own goal to enroll PSE electric customers in the Green Power Program during the challenge. But only Snoqualmie captured an additional $20,000 by securing the highest percentage increase in new program participants from available electricity accounts. The City of Snoqualmie also made a substantial commitment to buy renewable energy for city buildings.
PSE's voluntary Green Power Program gives PSE electric customers a way to guarantee that some or all of the energy they use is matched with clean, renewable energy sources from the West. All of the renewable energy in PSE's Green Power Program is generated by independent producers of renewable power, and it's separate from those wind resources owned and operated by PSE.
Residential customers can purchase 100 percent green power for approximately $10 to $12 a month based on their actual usage, or buy a specific amount. Business customers can also participate and receive recognition benefits.
