Tolt student Gabby Klocek goes to regional spelling bee

Tolt Middle School student Gabrielle (Gabby) Klocek represented the Riverview School District at the King and Snohomish Counties Regional Spelling Bee at Town Hall in Seattle on Sunday, March 24. Seventy area students participated in the contest, the most ever in the bee’s 15-year history.

Klocek made it to the fourth round, conquering the words sitzmark (a depression left in the snow by a skier falling backward), Netherlander (a native of Holland), and affability (a disposition to be friendly and approachable), she narrowly missed the correct spelling of nubuck (a soft, sueded leather).

In February, Klocek won the Tolt spelling bee on the word tentacle, earning a trip to the regional competition plus one-year subscriptions to Encyclopedia Britannica and Powerspeak, a language learning program.

“Gabby placed higher than any other Tolt rep in the three years I have been the coordinator,” said Tolt Language Arts teacher Katie Switaj. “More importantly, she upheld the tradition of Tolt spellers being positive and supportive of participants from other schools. I was so proud of her!”

The Regional Spelling Bee was broadcast live on The Seattle Channel, and you can stream it from the channel’s website at www.seattlechannel.org/videos/video.asp?ID=5011306.
